Jazmine A. Smith first began playing field hockey, lacrosse and basketball at the tender age of 7, and knows firsthand what opportunities were provided and allotted by playing this sport. “I never knew that walking on a field at the age 7 to play a sport I never heard of before would change my life forever. As I got older, I saw the increasing need for young girls of color to be exposed to this sport, and from that day vowed to create a field hockey and lacrosse league for girls of color to play and be exposed. I want to give back to these young ladies, because this sport gave so much to me; it changed my life. As an African-American woman, I was granted the opportunity to play this sport, and by doing so, it opened up my world view and allowed me to learn about different cultures across the globe. Eyekonz teaches the importance of being a part of something bigger than self, and understanding the importance adhering to rules. Eyekonz wants field hockey and lacrosse to serve as a catalyst for growth and change. I want field hockey and lacrosse to serve the same purpose for them as it did for me, and be a beacon of light to so many of these young ladies. I want them to stand on my shoulders and rise to greatness.”
